Writing the Stories of Racha’s Wooden Houses

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NlUoxqsv-g   Who we are: We are a community-based organisation from the Racha region which aims to solve local problems through youth engagement and activism. The problem: Throughout the years 2002-2014, the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region was hit hard by migration: The region’s population decreased by 37%, with people looking to earn a better living outside the villages. In Racha, migration out of the villages continued after 2014 as well. Some villages have populations of just one, two, three, or ten residents. Several villages have been completely been abandoned. 46 villages in the Oni municipality don’t have a single child under a certain age. What we will do: In order to discourage village outward migration, we will create a tourist route which will feature Racha’s unique wooden houses. This will help develop the local tourism industry and benefit those still living in these houses, and will increase Racha’s touristic potential and generate interest among youth to provide tourism services. We will document the centuries-old wooden houses and create an online bilingual catalogue which will include the stories of the houses and their owners. The project will help promote the culture of Racha and save these traditional wooden houses.
